China, spring 1355. The Mongol Yuan dynasty is crumbling. On the Yangzi, Li Wen — a disgraced naval commander turned smuggler — learns that a sorcerer has slaughtered the monks of Wudang and taken his son Li Feng, fourteen years old. The ritual awaiting the boy will turn him into the living vessel of an emperor dead for eighty years. It will be completed at the next total eclipse — in seventy-two days.
