Blinded by his own hand and nearing the end of his life, Oedipus finds himself in the village of Colonus. Prophesied to die on holy ground sacred to the Furies, the king’s body will bless the land where he is buried. Meanwhile, the throne of Thebes is in jeopardy, with Oedipus’ sons feuding over the right to rule. Will the brothers fulfill the prophecy and die at each other’s hands?
Written shortly before the playwright’s death in 406 BC, Oedipus at Colonus is the second of the Theban plays. A master of tragedy, Sophocles was a pioneer of character development and introduced a number of developments to the dramatic art. The first performance of the play was staged by Sophocles’ grandson, who shared the same name.
