Plans for educational development in India were prepared early in the British period during the World War II. A plan called the Sargeant Plan was prepared to bring in 100% literacy in India by the year 1980 in the year 1937. Apart from this Mahatma Gandhi has also prepared a scheme of education by the name of Basic Education and which was implemented in the beginning of the independence period in India.
