It is uplifting as she handles this with dignity and grace, for the most part! I hope you'll really enjoy the story and get lost in the adventure of some pretty disturbing discoveries. You do not need to read Book One to know what's happening in this book, though I hope you do! This should be enjoyable if you just get lost and become Samantha, or Lindsay, or any of the characters that speaks to you!
