Germany's greatest playwright, Schiller was also an accomplished essayist and a powerful thinker. He used his experience as a dramatist as cynosure to contemplate the constitution and purpose of art.

This work comprises the bulk of Schiller's philosophical writings and is composed of two parts. The first, a series of letters that were originally published together as a book in 1794. The latter a collection of Schiller's finest essays regarding aesthetics.
