Tired of the litany of dead-end jobs she held since her divorce, this once stay-at-home-mom embarks on a year-long trip to teach at Anqing Vocational and Technical College in China. Despite her relatives' objections, she goes. Conversational English as a Foreign Language is what is expected of her. She is told that she doesn't need to speak the Chinese language because an interpreter will be provided. It's preferred that she speak English to accustom her students to hearing an American speaking her native tongue.

Living among the Chinese, she learns to have a greater appreciation for the kindness of the ordinary people, their customs and foods; except for the times she is offered chicken claws and donkey. Being enamored with one of her liaisons, she contemplates a clandestine relationship. She thinks better of it…

Two days before she's about to fly home, she finds out learning to speak Chinese was essential. This was the worst part of her trip, forcing her to leave behind a young, black Spitz that she bought.
