Sophomore Katie Krieg finds a note in her backpack written with letters cut out of a magazine. The note accuses her of having a ''thing'' with the young, handsome lit teacher, Mr. Grayson. Who would do this? And why? Until this, her life was filled with choir practice, homework, and friends. More notes appear and tension mounts. She knows if her classmates find out about the notes, her reputation, and Mr. Grayson's career will both be ruined, even though it's not true. The notes escalate in their accusations until she begins to wonder if she is losing her mind due to the anticonvulsant medication she takes. Could this be my own doing? As a result of encephalitis she suffered as little girl, Katie is afflicted with psycho-motor epilepsy. As the story unfolds, the reader learns about this disorder and its treatment. As Katie says, ''I don't try to hide it, but it's not something you want to go around broadcasting, either. People are still in the Dark Ages about epilepsy and seizure disorders.'' Don't Cross Your Heart Katie Krieg is a compelling mystery and drives home the importance of friendship, trust, and compassion.
