The value of nearly all antiques is affected by relatively small vari-ations which cannot be accurately explained by a photograph or sketch with a short caption. In order to provide real help on prices (as well as understand the subject itself), it is necessary to go into the special features, many of them unique to each subject, which influence values. Thus, for each of the 112 or so subjects covered in this book, there are on average twelve to fifteen prices, and in some cases very many more, ac-cording to the complexity of the pricing structure of that particular antique. The values in the book will be updated each year so that it will not go out of date. Never before has such detailed assistance on valuation of antiques been given. James Mackay was born in Inverness, educated at Hillhead High School and the University of Glasgow where he read History. He began writing about collectable subjects while serving in the Army in the Outer Hebrides and has since become one of the most versatile and prolific writers on every aspect of collecting. Currently he is the Financial Times columnist on philately and numis-matics and is a regular contributor to a number of collectors' magazines on both sides of the Atlantic. He is a well-established specialist author on collecting subjects although this is the first time he has written on the factors affecting values. His latest books include the Encyclopaedia of Small Antiques and Rural Craft in Scotland. He lives in Dumfries, Scotland and is a keen collector of a wide variety of antiques. No author can be expert on every subject and the list of acknowledge-ments to over fifty experts indi-cates the thoroughness with which the author has worked.
