A collection of 21 colloquium papers given in 1994 by leading international figures in the study of Greek jewellery, presenting new material from excavations in Greece, Turkey and Italy, as well as previously unknown pieces from old amd new collections. Wide-ranging questions are asked about the makers of Greek jewellery, its owners and the culture in which it was created. There are discussions of regional and individual styles, and of types and forms of jewellery throughout the Greek world and beyond, both as actually worn and as represented in other art forms. Some papers cross the artificial modern boundary between jewellery and plate, while a series of important essays look at fundamental technological issues including the refining of gold and methods of construction.
