A down-on-his-luck tramp slips into an abandoned house on a dismal London street, hoping for nothing more than a night's shelter and a crust of cheese. Instead, a bell rings. A pleasant-faced young man asks questions that lead nowhere. A beautiful girl climbs in through a back window and presses a pound note into his hand to make him stay. Then comes the Indian, with a voice like silk over steel, warning him to leave before nightfall.Across the road, an old man paces a shuttered room while a long, sacking-wrapped bundle is delivered by cart. A glamorous woman glides in with a drugged cigarette and a chauffeur who is not what he seems. Every hour brings a new visitor, a new threat, a new impossible question - and the house opposite watches from behind its yellow blind.Out of his depth and clinging to a battered boot, the reluctant hero discovers he cannot simply walk away. Something is waiting across the street, and it will not let him go until the truth comes out.
