This is a wonderful little gem, outstanding even among Blandford's series of "pocket encyclopedia" volumes. The best feature are the colour illustrations which, like the text, have been prepared with painstaking attention to historical accuracy. Accompanying them are Blandford's usual fact-packed descriptions of each illustrated entry and its history, together with an informative seven-page historical overview. In here you will find medieval fancies, the eighteenth-century race between hot air and hydrogen, barrage balloons, aircraft carriers of the sky, the great Zeppelins, journeys to the edge of space and much much more, all told through the aircraft themselves. A glossary, bibliography and index complete this beautiful little book.
