The whole story of my going to the Antarctic began when my manager, Judy Arnold, in the course of one of our conversations said, "By the way, I had this call from the Philharmonia Orchestra, who put me in touch with the British Antarctic Survey in Cambridge, and there's this idea, that they might like you to write this Antarctic Symphony to mark the 50th anniversary of the Vaughan Williams "Sinfonia Antarctica, and the music he composed in the film Scott of the Antarctic".

I was more and more grabbed by the idea, and thought that this was going to be tremendous fun......
