Samenvatting:

This book looks at divorce and remarriage in the Bible. Man was created to lead his family, and his wife was created to help him. That means divorce and remarriage should be looked at through a patriarchal lens. Man was allowed to divorce his wife according to the Law of Moses (Deuteronomy 24:1). A woman is not to separate from her marriage. If a woman did separate, she was commanded to remain unmarried or reconcile to her husband (1 Corinthians 7:10-11). The man was instructed to not marry unless loosed from his wife (1 Corinthians 7:27-28). The divorced woman was not given permission to remarry but we assume she is (Deuteronomy 24:1-4; Matthew 19:9; Romans 7:2; 1 Corinthians 7:39-40). If a widow remarried while her husband was still living, she was not to partake of the widow's fund (1 Timothy 5:9-10). And for a man to be selected for leadership in the church he was to be still married to his first wife (1 Timothy 3:2). The disciples asked Jesus if this is the case between a man and his wife, is it best not to marry (Matthew 19:10). In this world, men are afraid to get married because of family court. The birth rate is dangerously low, and children being born out of wedlock are dangerously high. But Paul said it is better to marry than burn with passion for those who practice sexual immorality will not inherit the Kingdom of God (1 Corinthians 6:9-10; Galatians 5:19-21).
