Samenvatting:

The camera was probably set up on a bridge. Evenings, it filmed the traffic as it raced along an expressway. Watching the video, many minutes go by in which the viewer cannot see much more than blinding headlights, cannot see any of the drivers. Yet suddenly, as if halted by the unseen hand of a phantom, the cars stop. People get out, stand next to their vehicles, and sink their heads. Only an explanation makes it possible to understand Trembling Time (2001) by Israeli video artist Yael Bartana (* 1970): it shows the annual minute of silence in the country for those who fell in Israel's wars. Bartana's works reflect the relationship between the individual and society while taking into consideration the specific political situation in her homeland. This publication contains an extensive visual and written presentation of all of the artist's works, as well as a complete videography.
