In the early 1960s, the Swiss-born realist painter Franz Gertsch visited Scotland. Inspired by the flourishing of Abstract Expressionism in Europe, as well as the Scottish landscape, which so readily lent itself to that form of painting--open, verdurous, free--he created the watercolors collected in this volume. This publication is the most comprehensive presentation of all Gertsch's early watercolors in full-page color illustration, and establishes him as an important watercolor painter to be ranked along with Thomas Schttte and Luc Tuymans.
